Family of Miners, Scotland, 1982

About this artwork

Local junior football clubs are still a feature of the former mining areas. They carry the intense local pride felt in the villages. This woman could have been a fan of Glenafton (black and white colours until 1960 and based in New Cumnock, where the photo may have been taken), Cumnock Juniors, or Ayr United. Her partner – missing an arm, possibly the result of a mining injury – sports a Rangers scarf.  Former miners still loyally support both local and ‘big’ teams, without contradiction.
