About this artwork

Frank was born in Glasgow in 1908, the eldest of three children of Russian refugees. She died in 2008, at the age of 100. Between 1927 and 1932 she produced numerous drawings for the Glasgow University Magazine (GUM): this drawing was published there in December 1930. The title ‘Dusty Answer’ and the lengthy quote at the bottom are from the poem ‘Modern Love’ by George Meredith (1828-1909). The quote at the top of the work is from the book ‘Dusty Answer’ by Rosamond Lehmann (1901-1990). It was published in 1927 and was daring in dealing with lesbian love and the loss of innocence.
