Carel Weight

Sinister Encounter

About this artwork

This painting was inspired by a walk the artist took whilst visiting South Wales in 1984. Weight recalled: “It had been a beautiful day ending with a wonderful sunset. When the sun had gone down, the sky remained brilliant but the road was strangely dark and the few people I passed had a ghostly look. At once I wanted to paint a picture... This work is not just a recording of something seen but also a work of my imagination.” Weight has painted the sky in layers to capture the glow of the setting sun. Yet its vibrancy and luminosity, together with the figures’ helpless expressions, implies a more sinister scene.
