Brown and Orange Relief with Prisms
About this artwork
This constructed relief shows distinct parallels with the work of Anthony Hill, who Wise was working closely with at this time. However Wise explored colour to a greater degree than Hill, as demonstrated in this piece. Wise has selected a beautiful piece of wood with a strongly pronounced knot and grain. This organic surface is then juxtaposed against the distinctly man-made planes of the plastic and glass. Wise has also included prisms which became an integral part of her work at this time. She exploits them to reflect light into the centre of her reliefs. Like Hill’s work, the breakdown of the surfaces and textures into orthogonal planes creates a balanced, visually pleasing composition.
