Carafe
About this artwork
Carafe distils its subject into something very simple and beautiful. It is one of a small number of printed still lifes made by Prunella Clough during the early 1950s. Known for her paintings based on urban and industrial landscapes, these unusual and experimental works each exist in only a few artist proof impressions. Clough taught herself lithography from books and set up a press in her studio. She drew directly onto stones and sometimes used transfer paper – where the tusche drawing is made on treated paper and transferred to the stone by contact.
