Felicitas Vogler

Paros, 1959

About this artwork

Throughout April and May of 1959 Vogler and her husband, fellow artist Ben Nicholson, travelled to Italy, via Greece, with Swan Hellenic cruises. On the journey they visited several locations, including the island of Paros. This photograph is typical of Vogler’s desire to capture more unconventional compositions. It shows a deserted lane on the island, the only real evidence of human habitation a row of white underpants hanging out to dry, framed against a blue wooden door. The colours and tone are soft, with Vogler suggesting the effect of the scorching sun bleaching the colours. The shadows cast by the tree and the washing on to the crisp white walls demonstrates the artist’s interest in abstract patterns.
