‘The Precinct (Bull Yard)’ illustrates a building reduced to its geometrical essentials. Although Paterson has made reference to an actual retail building in Coventry, ‘The Precinct (Bull Yard)’ is stripped of context and simplified to create a grid-like pattern of primary colours reminiscent of works by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. Paterson has a keen interest in post-war modernist architecture which he uses as a language to explore the boundaries between realism and abstraction. He deconstructs architectural forms in his work to create pieces which are sometimes understandable as built constructions, like this one, while others are purely abstract.
