Untitled I

About this artwork

Jones is one of a generation of artists who have spearheaded a move away from the likes of conceptual, installation and video art in favour of what has been termed a ‘return to painting’. However, his paintings are far from traditional. They are, in effect, paintings primarily about the art of painting, about the material substance of paint and the support it is attached to. Here, oil paint is thickly applied and scraped off, pushing the glutinous material over the edges of the deep stretcher. This creates a distinctly tactile, sculptural quality which encourages the viewer to examine the work from different angles, cementing the physicality of the surface.
