About this artwork

A contemporary wrote of Portmore that 'he is one of the best foot officers in the world; is very brave and bold; has a great deal of wit; very much a man of honour and nice that way...pretty well shaped; dresses clean; but one eye.'A professional soldier, Lord Portmore had served with William of Orange before the Revolution of 1688 and was one of his firmest supporters in subsequent campaigns. Surprisingly, perhaps, he married a woman who had been a favourite mistress of James VII and II – witty Catherine Sedley, who had been created Countess of Dorchester in her own right.
