About this artwork
This low-relief ceramic sculpture represents Helena Kennedy QC, one of Britain’s leading lawyers and, since 1997, a Labour member of the House of Lords as Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws. Kennedy currently chairs the Human Genetics Commission, which advises the government on ethical and legal issues with regard to genetic science. She has held a variety of other important positions, including that of Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University (1994-2001), Chair of the British Council (1998-2004) and President of the National Children’s Bureau (1998-2005). Passionate about social justice, she has spent her professional life campaigning for civil liberties and promoting human rights. She has written and broadcast on a wide range of issues, from medical negligence to the rights of women and children.
