Baird was born in Montrose in 1904 and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He spent so long on each painting that his recorded collection of work comprises less than thirty finished oil paintings. After graduating, he returned to Montrose and lived there for the rest of his life. This work is a portrait of his fiancée, Ann Fairweather, whom he married in 1945.
