Twenty Scenes from the Life of Christ [scenes 1 and 2 above; scenes 11 and 12 below]

About this artwork

The sequence begins with the Raising of Lazarus. Christ's command to Lazarus is painted in Latin on the panel, as if the spoken word has materialised into writing. The miracle is witnessed by other figures, including two of Christ's disciples and Lazarus' two sisters. Christ's Entry into Jerusalem on a donkey follows. Palm fronds and a cloak are strewn on the ground and one enthusiastic onlooker has climbed a tree. Below, Christ is depicted disrobing prior to the Raising of the Cross, described graphically on the right.
