Anne Redpath

Tulips

About this artwork

Redpath painted still life subjects throughout her career, often focussing on the objects and furniture in her own home. This painting was made towards the end of her career when she painted with oils in a thick impasto style, using a palette knife. In these paintings objects appeared to float in space rather than sit on a surface. She said in a broadcast in 1960, ‘Lots of people didn’t like my idea of things that seemed quite real and yet looked as if there was no law of gravity. But now that my objects are really just in thin air, people don’t mind that at all.’
