My Baby Moon

About this artwork

‘My Baby Moon’ is about Redfern's experience of motherhood: "I was expressing the turbulent and contradicting feelings involved in the experience of having a 'new' baby... I suppose I was painting the extraordinary beauty of the baby's presence but also the terrifying reality of responsibility. It is both exhilarating and frightening.... The mother is portrayed twice. She is beautiful and powerful but is also overwhelmed - her two selves dance with and confront each other. The crow on the left is a symbol of the baby's selfishness, the beak eternally open."
