Étaples
About this artwork
Peploe and fellow Scottish Colourist, John Duncan Fergusson travelled to France together for the first time in 1904, to work in Brittany. They returned to paint the north-coast towns and resorts of Dieppe, Étaples and Paris-Plage several times before Fergusson moved to Paris in 1907. Étaples reveals Peploe’s interest in the French Impressionists, with whose work he was familiar since studying in Paris in 1894. In this small painting Peploe has created a dense image of a street scene, constructed in thick, freely applied paint and using a palette based on shades of blue with red highlights.
