Portrait of the Artist's Wife
About this artwork
Peploe met his future wife, Margaret Mackay, on the Hebridean island of Barra in 1894, where she is believed to have been working at the post office. She got a transfer to the branch on Frederick St in Edinburgh and they married, after a sixteen-year courtship, in the Scottish capital in 1910. They had two sons; Willy born in 1910 and Denis born in 1914. This portrait of Margaret from about 1907 shows Peploe’s expressive brushstrokes and enjoyment in exploring the physical qualities of the paint.
