Jock Stein, 1922 - 1985. Footballer and football manager

About this artwork

A player of only modest ability, Jock Stein took up football to avoid spending a lifetime down the coalmines of his native Lanarkshire. Stein came into his own as a football manager. He turned the little-known Dunfermline Athletic into a team of European calibre. Glasgow Celtic became his real success story. Under his management the club won several League Cups, many Scottish Cups and various European titles. In 1978 Stein became Scotland's National Manager and the team qualified for the 1982 World Cup Finals in Spain.
