Billy McNeill, 1940 - 2019. Footballer

About this artwork

McNeill joined Celtic in 1957 and made his way into the first team aged only 19. A majestic defender, he spent his entire career with the club and won more medals than any other player in British football history. As captain of the team he became the first Briton ever to hold the European Cup when Celtic beat Inter Milan in the 1967 final in Lisbon. McNeill retired as a player in 1975, after over 800 appearances for Celtic and 29 caps for Scotland. As a manager he worked briefly with Manchester and Aston Villa, before winning the double of the League Championship and Scottish Cup with Celtic in 1988. He resigned after four years in 1991.
