About this artwork

Charles Avery has been working on an ongoing, epic project called ‘Islanders’, since 2004, in which he describes the topology and cosmology of an imaginary island, whose every feature embodies a philosophical proposition, problem or solution. On this imaginary ‘Island’, the visitor encounters strange animals, bizarre behaviour and even unknown gods. By using his drawings to claim veracity for these imaginary worlds, he contrasts realism with the very flights of invention which the medium makes possible. Avery’s drawings are entirely improvised and evolve as they are being made. They are often left in an apparently unfinished state which echoes the ongoing and open-ended nature of his whole ‘Islanders’ project.
