About this artwork

Born in Ireland, O’Conor spent his working life in France. Here, he depicts the view from the villa he rented in Cassis, on the French Riviera, during the summer of 1913. The bright Mediterranean sunlight made the area popular with artists who were experimenting with vibrant colour and bold brushwork. O’Conor applied his paint sparingly, allowing the bare canvas to show through. The details of the landscape appear indistinct, as if seen through a mirage.
