About this artwork

This photograph shows the same scene, shot at a different moment, as another of Horn’s images: ‘Man at hot spring, Strútur, Iceland 1990’. The only major differences are a slight shift of camera angle and the position of the man (here he is in the water as opposed to standing at the edge of the pool). In 1990 Horn began ‘To Place’, a series of books in which she represents the Icelandic landscape with images such as this one. She is interested in challenging our understanding of place and identity as static. By using the Icelandic landscape, shaped by volcanic activity, Horn presents us with images of place in fluctuation. By re-purposing the images from the books and retitling them, Horn also alters the identity of the image for the viewer.
