Statue of Sir Walter Scott by Sir John Robert Steell before it was placed in the Sir Walter Scott Monument [Art 16]
About this artwork
Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) is one of Scotland’s most famous writers. This statue designed by Sir John Robert Steell (1804–1891) sits at the centre of the monument. Though not visible in this photograph, Scott is accompanied by his loyal dog Maida. In addition to this central statue, there are 68 sculptures on the monument of Scottish writers and characters from Scott’s novels. The Scott Monument is still one of the largest monuments dedicated to a writer anywhere in the world.
