André Masson
La Rivière en hiver [The River in Winter]
About this artwork
In 1921 Masson moved into a studio next-door to Joan Miró in Paris, and the two became friends. Their studios became the focus of the Surrealist group, which began to emerge at that time. This is a late work, when Masson – who earlier in his career was known for his violent and erotic imagery – became interested in Renoir’s landscapes.
