Gillian Wearing

The Garden

About this artwork

This work originates in a photograph taken during the making of Gillian Wearing’s 1993 film also titled The Garden. Having purchased slogan t-shirts in London, she invited each cast member to pick a shirt and perform on camera. In the screenprint, Wearing has used colour to emphasise the slogans, drawing our eyes primarily to the branding on their torsos rather than the women themselves. The t-shirts, like uniforms, both declare and mask the nature of each character. Appearing in the image herself (second from the left), Wearing shows that she’s implicated in the systems of identity and performance explored in her work.
