About this artwork

Juxtaposition of unrelated elements is a theme common in Hapaska’s work. This print shows the American operatic soprano Maria Callas, floating imperiously above a mass of American air-force planes, grouped together as if in a graveyard. The inclusion of the planes also echoes the artist’s interest in travel. She explains, ‘I believe people are always travelling somewhere, even if it’s only aspirational.’ This work is from a portfolio of prints by eleven different London-based artists, called ‘Screen’. The title is taken from the screenprint technique but also refers to the fact that most of the artists had worked with film or photography.
