About this artwork

The son of a poet, Hay was apprenticed to the house painters Gavin Beugo & Robertson. He decorated Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott and the Palace of Holyroodhouse for Queen Victoria. He took a strong interest in the theoretical aspects of his work, publishing the Laws of Harmonious Coloring. He was also responsible for the decoration of the National Gallery of Scotland.
