Illustration to 'Willie Brew'd a Peck O' Malt' by Robert Burns
About this artwork
This is an illustration of Robert Burns’s song ‘Willie Brewed a Peck O’Malt’ which he wrote in 1789. Burns penned many songs and poems on the subject of drinking alcohol, but in that poem he also touched on the unity and brotherhood of men that alcohol enhances. Burns set the scene and states that their drinking is a regular occurrence with the lines, "Here are we met, three merry boys / Three merry boys I trow are we; / And mony a night we've merry been, / And mony mae we hope to be!". In this drawing Weigall has inscribed the names of the drinkers on his sheet. There is William Nicol, Allan Masterson and Robert Burns, and the scene takes place "at Moffat".
