About this artwork

The third generation to run his family’s successful publishing house, he is best known as the publisher of Charles Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species’ (1859). He also published a number of popular travel books, at the time the railways were beginning to open up the possibility of continental travel for a wider audience. These books set the model for future travel guides in Victorian Britain.
