This engraving is from Edina Delineata a series of images showing the buildings of Edinburgh, published in 1789 and issued in four instalments. This view of the New Bridewell was part of the third group of images to be issued, alongside views of High Street from the Tron Church, Heriot’s Hospital and the Ruins of Holyrood Chapel. The Bridewell on Edinburgh’s Calton Hill was a prison, designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam and built in 1791.The turreted Governor’s House survives.
