About this artwork

In the early and mid-1920s Hunter painted numerous landscapes in and around Largo on the east coast of Fife. A friend described going to see him at the beginning of October 1923, and finding Hunter painting in a field: “The farmer was clearing the cornfield of the stooks and he (Hunter) was anxious to get the picture completed before the stooks were removed. It is a fine picture, full of fine form and the true spirit of Scottish landscape.” The painting referred to was probably this one, though a sketch of a similar scene, dated 1924, also exists.
