About this artwork

In the 1920s Man Ray concentrated on photography at the expense of painting. In 1929 the 22-year-old Lee Miller turned up at his door and announced that she was his new student. Man Ray began to devote more time to painting from that moment, taking a separate painting studio where he usually worked in the mornings. He made a series of automatic paintings there, sometimes squeezing the paint directly onto specially prepared silvered panels.
