This portrait is typical of Cosway’s miniature style, which he had perfected by the 1780s. It shows John Campbell, first Baron Cawdor of Castlemartin. His face is delicately finished with his coat and white collar slightly more painterly. The paint on the ivory creates a luminous feel resulting in an extremely flattering image. Campbell’s family originated from Scotland, yet he was born and grew up in England and Wales (his great grandfather’s wife had inherited land in Wales). He was MP for Cardigan and Governor of Milford Haven from 1780 until his death.
