Humphrey Spender

Women with Children, Glasgow

About this artwork

In 1939 Spender was commissioned by Picture Post magazine to photograph Glasgow as part of a series focusing on Britain’s industrial cities. Using an unobtrusive 35 mm camera, he photographed various aspects of Glasgow life in a candid documentary style. Despite reporting high unemployment in the shipbuilding industry and a chronic housing shortage, the article concluded that there was ‘no friendlier city in Britain'.
