Duncan Grant

Vanessa Bell Painting

About this artwork

Painted in 1915, Grant depicts Bell working on a still-life painting of kitchenware. The setting was a houseboat-studio moored near their lodgings in West Wittering on the Sussex coast. Grant was introduced to Bell at the Friday Club, a free-thinking circle of artists and writers that she established with her siblings. Their relationship intensified in 1913 when Roger Fry appointed them as co-directors of the Omega workshops. This may explain why Grant later incorrectly dated the canvas to that year.
