About this artwork

This is an early work, executed at Crémieu, east of Lyons, while Harpignies was a pupil of Jean Achard. It displays a concern with a type of massive, hilly scenery that was beginning to fascinate Courbet at this time. Harpignies was a prolific artist. His later landscapes, often of lesser quality, were popular with collectors who found Impressionist pictures too advanced for their taste.
