About this artwork

This is one of several paintings dating from around 1520 in which Giulio reworked compositions by his teacher Raphael in his own style. The figures are based closely on a half-length Raphael composition known as the Madonna of the Rose (Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado). The nocturnal landscape, imposing rusticated archway, tiny figure of Joseph with his donkey in the background, and the strident colour scheme are Giulio’s own inventions.
