About this artwork

Traquair made this modestly-sized easel painting towards the end of her work on the celebrated Song School of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh. It is painted in a naturalist style, the boy’s face is acutely observed and the setting is a Borders landscape. The 'Shepherd Boy' was part of the artist’s bequest to the Scottish National Gallery.
