The Feast of Herod (after Peter Paul Rubens)

About this artwork

This photograph is based on The Feast of Herod by Rubens, which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. The photograph is one of a series based on works from the collection, in which Colvin aimed to show the relevance of the paintings to modern life. There is humour in the photograph, such as the severed head of John the Baptist being presented on a wheeled trolley. The figure at the end of the table is a self-portrait of the artist, sitting in the place where Herod sat in the original painting.
