Murray Johnston
New Mexico Desert
About this artwork
Murray Johnston's landscape photography pays close attention to the way light, reflection and shadow change the appearance of solid shapes. Here we get a clear sense of the sun's position from the direction in which the tree's shadow spreads. It overruns the entire sand dune in the foreground before disappearing over the edge. In the little bright patch on the right, scrubby dune grass fights off the desert and the gigantic shadow.
