About this artwork

Dated 1664, this picture is described by the biographer of Bolognese artists, Carlo Cesare Malvasia, as having been painted for an unnamed Florentine ‘Cavaliere’ the year before Elisabetta’s death. The work was acquired for the Edinburgh Royal Institution from the Gerini collection in Florence in 1831.
