Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, 1883 - 1937. Artist (Self-portrait)

About this artwork

Edinburgh-born artist FCB Cadell was one of four painters who became known as the Scottish Colourists. After spending time in Paris, Munich and Venice, Cadell returned to his native city. In this self-portrait, he blurs the distinction between art and artist. His smock is rendered with the same rapid brushstrokes of white tones as the background. The blobs of colour seen on his palette are used to describe his face and the painting behind him.
