About this artwork

Scott made a prolonged visit to Italy from 1832-34, including a 15 month stay in Rome which gave him the chance to improve his drawing technique. The first sketch for this painting was made during his time in Rome and is believed to be based on an experimental fresco that Scott was painting on his studio wall. The model is referred to in Scott’s journals as ‘La Fornarina', the nickname used for the mistress and model of Raphael.
