Captain Adam Duncan, later Admiral Duncan and 1st Viscount of Camperdown, 1731 - 1804
About this artwork
Adam Duncan of Perthshire entered the Navy in 1748, and was commissioned to the Mediterranean in 1749 by Commodore Augustus Keppel, who invited Reynolds to accompany them to Italy. The Captain, later made Admiral, would have known the 1752 portrait of Keppel, now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, which made Reynolds' name. Duncan was created Baron of Lundie and Viscount of Camperdown for victory at the naval battle in 1797. This was commemorated by Henri-Pierre Danloux in a painting held at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
