About this artwork

Jean Adam was the daughter of John Adam and niece of Robert Adam the celebrated Scottish architect. She married the Ayrshire advocate Thomas Kennedy in 1779. Although the couple separated in 1808, her portrait was apparently painted as a pair to that of her husband (also in the Gallery’s collection). Both portraits may have been commissioned by their son Thomas Francis Kennedy, a Whig politician and advocate and frequent patron of Raeburn.
