John Wauchope of Edmonstone (1742 - 1810)
About this artwork
In the 18th century the socially ambitious lairds of Niddry (now Niddrie) also acquired the nearby Edmonstone estate on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh. Around 1800 the head of the dynasty sat to Raeburn in his new studio on York Place, a few streets from this gallery. In 1766 Wauchope had married his own first cousin, Anne Erskine of the House of Dun near Montrose. Her companion portrait and another of their son James, both by Raeburn, are also in the National Galleries of Scotland’s collection.
