Sir Henry Raeburn
James Wauchope of Edmonstone (1767 - 1797)
About this artwork
This portrait of James, eldest son of John Wauchope of Edmonstone, was painted around 1787-90 when Raeburn had just returned to Edinburgh from Italy, and was establishing himself as the foremost Scottish portraitist. This painting is an interesting example of his style at the outset of his career. The National Galleries of Scotland also has portraits of James's father and also of his mother, Anne Erskine.
