About this artwork

Raeburn’s portrait of David Deuchar (1743 – 1808) and his reciprocal sketch of Henry Raeburn as a Youth remained with Deuchar’s descendants until they were purchased by the National Galleries of Scotland in 1931. The two portraits were displayed by the family in a double hinged frame. Painted by Raeburn at the age of 17, this portrait is thought to be the earliest surviving work by the artist.
