Saint Jerome
About this artwork
Saint Jerome, the fourth-century saint who translated the Bible from Greek into Latin, is shown as a scholar in the wilderness, with a book and writing materials and his stone of self-punishment. The style of the painting, with its strong colouring and vigorous brushwork, is close to that of Mola, who was one of the leading painters in Rome in the mid-seventeenth century.
