A Silver Stream
About this artwork
The motif of cows grazing in a meadow is extremely common in Maris’s work. He liked to record the way the light reflected off the backs of the animals and once wrote ‘I do not paint cows, only light effects’. Maris stopped dating his pictures from the early 1870s onwards, but the free handling of this work indicates that it is a later work. The painting may depict the area around Oosterbeek and the neighbouring village of Wolfheze, where Maris painted throughout his life.
