About this artwork

Although he trained as an artist, for many years Fry focussed on his career as a critic, writer and curator. He was, initially, mainly interested in Old Master paintings but changed tack around 1907 when he saw paintings by Cézanne. He returned seriously to painting from about 1912, the date of the celebrated Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition, which he organised. White Road with Farm was probably painted in the south of France, around 1912. The tightly structured brushstrokes and geometric design derive from Cézanne.
